This is the favor that I designed for the Bratz team, and it was the honor of a lifetime to add to the Bratz canon! I grew up in NYC when Americanized punk was developing alongside hip hop, so that was my main inspiration for Sasha’s outfit. The textiles that I found in the company fabric room inspired me to go even further out there with Sasha’s design. (I also wanted to pay homage to @hayden_williams 2018 Sasha collector doll’s jeans, but with a circa 2005 twist. ) The makeup I gave Sasha was inspired by the X-Men’s Storm-who in the 80’s wore a mohawk and winged eyeliner (and was so hardcore that she beat a powered Cyclops in a contest to lead the X-Men after she LOST her powers!) Sasha’s hair was completely inspired by a teenaged punk Black girl I saw in the East Village in 2003 literally a week before I moved to CA to work at Chic Boutique. The girl was rocking a black mesh top with a tube top underneath and a pink plaid school girl skirt, thigh highs and combat boots, wearing her natural loose curly hair. I was struck by the fact that she was punk, hanging out with her punk friends, but she didn’t change herself fundamentally to fit in, so I channeled that into Sasha. I gave Sasha slight differences in her accessories, like her boots and her suitcase and comb colors because it’s not at all Sasha’s personality to blindly follow in others’ footsteps!
